A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
