During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
