Chelsea Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh talk linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the persistent speculation about his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions After Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement come in the wake of he referred to a recent two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those original words had fueled widespread talk of a potential disagreement between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club next season and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca revealed that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the situation publicly, there has equally been no resolution offered, creating the matter unresolved.
The mood during these press conferences has become notably strained, raising fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable European draw with good results in their final games.
