Astronaut Shares Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a Amazon founder.
