A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
